A Study: Fiberglas,
Plastic, Cement substrates, all good materials for toys and indoor items! But
there's only one long lasting material that wont warp, rot, distort, expand,
absorb water, affect by the sun or simply fall apart after several years in the
weather that's Aluminum the proven material! were not experimenting here with
with your money were giving you your monies worth in an outdoor pool table.
Aluminum is used in most exclusive outdoor products that will last for years and
has a minimal change due to extreme weather changes, where as plastic and
fiberglass, although used in the building of boats, motorhomes and other outdoor
products gives and twists actually changing in dimensional sizes while
acceptable in these products this is not good for a pool table that must
maintain its size within thousandths of an inch to give you good playing
properties not to mention the long term terminal effect of bowing bending in the
center from the 500 lb piece of slate that is used for a play surface.. These
lesser quality pool tables are somewhat forced to use a lighter fiberglass
cement substrate simply meaning a concrete base product impregnated with
fiberglass strands to lighten and strengthen the material but still not near as
stable or strong as backed slate by far.
Several so called outdoor pool table
manufacturers actually have used cheap imported indoor pool tables and stapled
"marine grade vinyl"(the word marine grade is used to distract you) and
sold them as outdoor products!! Its not rocket science here a piece of wood
covered with plastic is still a piece of wood not weather proof although a
little more weather resistant and have only extended the life marginably by not
allowing water to penetrate directly.
